Chapter Eleven – Jamie
“Can I watch cartoons?” Juliet asked as soon as they walked through the door.
“You don’t want to play outside?” Jamie asked.
“Not today. I’m tired. School is hard.” Juliet flopped down on the sofa.
“OK.” A little TV wouldn’t hurt, although he was sure it would be against Fiona’s rules. He looked out of the window, half expecting to see Fiona bustling towards the house, as if summoned by his thoughts. She wasn’t, but he knew a visit might be imminent.
Jamie went to the kitchen and came back with a snack for them all, which he sat and shared with them while Juliet watched her favorite show. It had a bear in it, which was OK with him, even if it was not exactly educational. No self-respecting bear would ever stick their paws in a bees’ nest for honey.
His bear snorted, of course they would. Honey is just soooo delicious.
Great role model you are going to be, Jamie told his bear.
“OK, if I sit Jasper in his walker, can you keep an eye on him? I have some chores to do. And I am sure he would rather watch cartoons than watch me clean the bathroom,” Jamie said.
“Sure,” Juliet said.
“Yell if you need me,” Jamie added, and then disappeared upstairs. He was about to set himself a challenge: clean the house before dinner.
Two hours later, a defeated Jamie sat down at the kitchen table to eat the dinner he had hastily prepared. The bathroom had eaten into most of his time, and then he’d put the laundry away and cleaned the bedrooms. For a man who could strip a rifle in record time and then reassemble it without pausing for breath, how could scrubbing a bathtub clean create such a challenge? Because it had been punctuated by Jasper crying, a diaper change, Juliet needing a drink, Juliet losing the remote, and then Jasper needing another diaper change. He did not even want to think of what Jasper had eaten at the daycare today that had caused a violent green explosion.
He was going to have to work on his skills.
“Henry asked if I could go to his house for dinner one day,” Juliet said.
“Did he?”
“Yes, he said he’d get his mom to talk to you about it.”
“I’m OK with it, as long as it’s OK with Freyja.” Jamie looked across to Juliet. “You’ve settled into school really well. I’m proud of you.”
She smiled. “I thought I’d hate it. But I have friends. And Miss Darling is really nice.” Juliet studied Jamie for a moment, her innocent face working through something, and then she said, “Why don’t you invite Miss Darling over for dinner?”
Jamie nearly choked on the mouthful of food he had just put into his mouth. “I’m not sure she would come. She said she didn’t want to mix with the parents of children from school.”
“I know what she said. But I also know she watches you out of the window. She pretends she is watching the other children, but mostly she looks at you.
